Hi all, I was curious about the process that searchers have taken to develop 30,000 foot, macro level trends and use those to inform which industries to begin their search.

Would love to get some perspectives on:

-how do you ideate on researching trends?

-eventually settling on an industry to pour effort into and search.

thanks!

Earnings calls and presentations from relevant firms can include macro commentary, but remember that management is incentivized to blame conditions when they underperform. If you have access to CapIQ etc. (not a given) then analyst coverage reports, especially initiation of coverage, will have great industry primers and benchmark info.

try an industry map -- start with an area with high growth (e.g., data centers) then find adjacent / related industries, and try to map out all of the picks & shovels that serve those industries
