As Labor Day weekend winds down in the USA, the dealmaking scene is about to get busier. Fall is one of the best times for finding and closing deals.
About 15-20% of businesses are for sale or would be with the right inquiry. While few of the best-of-the-best are advertised, they are available to searchers who know how to find and buy them.
It's ironic that in a country where so many dream of owning their own business, few people outside the financial circles know how to make it happen.
A "Peanuts" comic strip comes to mind: Charlie Brown is enjoying playing with a broken yo-yo, but Lucy tells him he can't have fun with it. Dejected, he stops playing. This story parallels those wanting to leave their jobs to buy a business. Some people, like Lucy, discourage taking control and pursuing dreams. They make us feel guilty for wanting more, and some stand in the way of our success. The real problem isn't wanting control or fun—it's not having enough of it when we need it, like right now, or for retirement, or whatever. Isn’t it?
