Hello,

Looking to some bright minds for ideas on finding vets to partner for a small clinic? Some partners and I own a kennel in Cypress, TX situated on two acres. We are building out an additional 1,500 sq ft and have room for a small vet clinic in an additional 1,500 sq ft. I know states can be sticklers on non vets owning clinics so am pondering doing a JV with a vet. Any ideas on how to go about this? Cold calling/emailing?

Thanks!

Hey - Vets are tough to find right now (currently operating a business running 15 clinics in a variety of states) - check this out; https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2022/07/not-enough-veterinarians-animals/661497/.

Also, TX is a corporate practice of medicine state which extends into the veterinary space. You'd have to setup an MSO or DSO type relationship (VSO?) wrapping the ownership by a vet in a PLLC that you'd then contract with under and MSA. Not super painful, but it is a legal paperwork drill that's a minor barrier to entry. The real issue would become if you're vet that owns the PLLC quits, then you've got a real issue on your hands and a strong succession agreement would need to be in place, tough to do at a small scale if the vets in question don't have significant skin in the game.
