When is the right time to engage potential investors?

Hi All,

I am in the midst of my self funded search and will need some excess capital to do a deal in my target range. When is the right time to engage potential outside investors? Is pre-LOI too soon or is it more advantageous to act sooner rather than later?

My view seems to echo those above. The best time to raise money is when you don't need it. Someone I used to work for told me this and it's stuck with me.
