Structure of options to a founder

Looking for tips, tricks and experience on getting a founder to accept an option on his business. I have secured a consulting engagement to fix a few items and do a DD . We have verbally agreed to an MBO but I don't want to pay for my own value. Any war stories or advice most appreciated .
