Sign manufacturing / installing businesses

I see a lot of sign manufacturing / installing / service businesses for sale. It appears to be a relatively fragmented market with a decent service component.

Does anyone here have experience evaluating or operating a business in this space that can share some insights into what to look for or to look out for?

I was in a very similar business and looked at a ton of sign companies (they were also my customers). The main question is if you are going to be just installation or manufacturing as well. If you are just installation, you can go after the big sign companies and get contracts for the large chain restaurants, retail, etc. If you go for manufacturing, then you would be going after some of the smaller strip centers, etc, which I found to be a race to the bottom.

Two bigger players in the sign space are Fast Signs (a franchise model) and Sign World, which will help you startup for a fee, but is banking on being your supplier, but isn't necessarily providing the full franchise support. I would look around to see who you could eventually exit to, as I'm not sure they are buyers.
