Hi - I am wondering how people decide which sectors to focus on when searching for an opportunity?

I am interested in real estate agencies, logistics and warehousing, and agribusiness.

I also find it interesting that a lot of blogs mention that most deals get done in sectors NOT initially identified by the searcher. Any thoughts on this?

Set your criteria?

What SDE’s are you looking for? How much do you wish to take from the business?

How do you think you can add value in a particular way?

Create an “acquisition statement” for example: Manufacturing businesses with an EBITA of $300,000 per year. Ideally a weak online presence (so you can fix this and experience growth) that could benefit from some operational fixes.

Lastly, listen to “Buy Then Build” by Walker Deibel. That should help 🙂.

If you’re open to it, then why don’t we connect via LinkedIn and we can discuss some more?

Look for a skills match. One of my best clients is a manufacturing engineer. He would not do well running a sales organization but kills it as a process guy. As mentioned by ^Jahrell Williams, it's all about where you add value. Think 30,000 foot level not the bottom of the funnel as many, many deals come in through the "side door" and you see them with an active search.
