HVAC and other home services are very popular in the community, yet often times require the business to have an active license. Owners often are willing to let you operate under their license, but what does this entail for those that have done it? Also, how long and how possible is it for an outsider to get a license such as one for AC?

In NC. It is not difficult to operate under someone else’s license. You just draft up an agreement to protect the licensee and the business for bad faith actions and keep the person on your books as an employee. Again in NC, they have to actually review and approve all permitted work but I’ve done this with HVAC, plumbing, and electric license holders. And is very common across the state.

Getting a license takes time but certainly can be done. Especially the lower tiered licenses if you’re only doing certain type of work ( res only). Most states have an “hours worked” requirement before you can test though.

The rules and regulations typically vary by state. You need to look at the licensing requirements in the states you are looking to buy in.
