So is it just me or has search become so standardized/institutionalized that for a traditional searcher bringing on an outside investor the terms are pretty much already fixed?  

Investors seem to have done this long enough to have collaborated the terms and so any deviation would require bringing on an investor who is from outside the search community?

Funded search terms are standardized, you have no leverage when raising search capital, and investors are unlikely to negotiate. If you want better terms, then self funded is the way to go.
