Hello all. Does anyone have experience with HVAC license requirements (particularly in the state of Georgia)? Does the owner/buyer of an HVAC services company need a license (e.g., the “Conditioner Air Non-Restricted Class 2” license)? Is it sufficient if one or more employees are licensed? Are there restrictions on the type of work you can do as an owner if you’re unlicensed? I’d love to connect with anyone who is knowledgeable on the subject.

Its very state specific. In AZ they are very lenient on who can hold the license (non-owner employee, even 3rd party individual), but I've heard other states may require at least a minority owner to hold the license and meet experience requirements. Not sure on GA. If its currently licensed, you will need a path to keep it licensed day 1 (its the first question lenders ask). Either your state's registrar of contractors website will give you the requirements or you should call that department directly (they are usually pretty helpful).

After reading this i went to the HVAC licensing page in GA, its cryptic but it does specify some guidelines. I would probably just call your department ask someone in the office. If that doesn't work, call or attend the local association for HVAC...you probably need to network anyway. There is always a work around with these things, see above comments, minority owner licensed, lead tech licensed with ownership, etc.
