I am very, very new to the finance world. I see the posts on this board and feel like a kindergarten kid reading it. I'm leaving oil and gas to get a full time MBA at a top 10 program. I applied to internships and came across a search internship. What is the pay you can expect from an established firm?

I came from Darden seven years ago. If this stuff is new to you, soon it'll be a second language that you know. You'll be more than fluent in it well before you realize you are.

As far as pay for an internship, I personally think doing a search find internship is a waste of time for an MBA. If you want to search, then do your own search for 2-3 months in the summer. In my opinion second year of b school and the summer are ideal times to look for a company to buy if you can raise the capital to do it. My first year was the hardest academic experience I'd ever had but second year was basically like studying hobby topics at a country club. You have time to go places and play video games and drink. So you might as well search during the time too. Direct message me if you'd like more of my endless opinions but I feel the way you're looking at this should be amended.

It's more than likely going to be unpaid, but I think there is still value in doing it. However I definitely wouldn't burn your one summer internship opportunity on it. Rather, I'd do it part time during the semester (10 or so hours a week is probably right). The experience you'll get will help you understand if it's even for you, and if so, get up to speed faster when you do launch. Plus you may be able to work out something with the fund where if you find something and they don't like it but you do, you can pursue it.
