Age of Searchers increasing?

With Private Equity moving downstream into the lower middle market, it seems as though I am seeing more seasoned individuals, moving into the search fund model that would previously be considered Unfunded or Independent Sponsors.  Is this a real trend or something I am solely seeing locally in my region?

It's definitely real. My own experience is one anecdote. I am also meeting with far more searchers in their 30s and 40s. I've seen a greater diversity of fund structures that are also helping this.

I would agree that the average age of a searcher is increasing. It is no longer seen as something that only a post-MBA student can go after, anyone can do it. That said, my guess would be that the self-funded model will also become more popular. Normal people in the corporate world further along in their careers with more funds to pursue a search will not have or want to rely on the traditional method. Many younger searchers, especially if footing the bill of an MBA have no other option financially.

The beauty of all of this is that the options for a hybrid approach are endless.
