How common is it to have a broker involved in your deal?What experience have you had working with them? Is their impact mostly positive, or not? How effective are they in preparing business owners for the sale of their business?

This highly depends on the broker. Some are very helpful and do what they can to make a deal happen. Some are organized and that can be valuable.
If you plan to work with one, buying or selling as your representative or the other side's, it's good to find one that is friendly. But like most people, they are a "cat in a bag".
How effective are they in preparing business owners for a sale? Well, see above. But many are quite logical and will be realistic with you.
