When ChatGPT recommends your competitor instead of your business
We tried to argue our way to the top of ChatGPT
In 2024, we asked ChatGPT which local rafting company it recommended. It named another outfitter and left us out entirely. About 30 river guides took that personally. So we tried to change its mind.
Naturally, we spent the evening explaining why we deserved the recommendation.
Our approach earned us an orange policy warning. I glanced over my shoulder. Was this how you got on the Terminator’s list?
Eventually, I stopped arguing and started researching what people and search systems could actually find about our business. Search became a meaningful part of our growth.
My background was in sales. I’d learned to sell to people. Now I had to understand the machines shaping their shortlist.
I wrote up the story and what changed as we went from buried in search results to one of the top-rated rafting outfitters in our market.
