I have $500,000 in my U.S. bank account. I will use this money in 8 to 14 months for an acquisition. My money market account only pays 0.5% interest; I would like to do better than that but I cannot afford to lose the principal. So what's a good short-term or medium-term investment that pays a more attractive return without being illiquid or risky?

50bps on liquid money isn't bad. You can probably get closer to 1.00% on some of the online offers for MMA accounts, but that is going to be top of the market. If you need it in the next 8-14 that is the best you are going to get without any risk.
