What negotiation reading has actually held up?
One of our members asked what to read on negotiation after a broker meeting went sideways, and the thread was useful enough that I'll share here.
1.
"Never Split the Difference," Chris Voss. Former hostage negotiator and the most immediately usable of the three. Tactical empathy, calibrated questions, and the value of a well placed "no." There's a Masterclass on it too if that's more your style.
2.
"Getting to Yes." by Fisher and Ury. More academic but still worth the read. This is where BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) comes from, which is a core concept in deal negotiation. Your alternative to the deal is the only real source of leverage you have. Searchers who have one negotiate differently than those who don't.
3.
ZOPA is the other acronym worth internalizing: Zone of Possible Agreement. If the seller's floor is above your ceiling, there's not deal, and recognizing that early can save months.
