Again, I'm just starting out.  What kind of lawyer do I need to help set up my search fund?  M&A? Finance? Small business?  Is there an appreciable number of attorneys who have some specific experience with search funds?

And does one use the same or different attorneys for search fund formation versus, later in the process, due diligence?

Hi, ^redacted‌ - The attorneys listed are ones who have been identified as having worked on search fund deals and/or being familiar with this space. As ^redacted‌ mentions, the hope in listing them is to save you some time and/or money in trying to find a knowledgeable attorney and/or getting one to ramp up on this space. There are likely others who are in this space that we have not heard of yet. So, if anyone knows of other lawyers, feel free to send them our way. Also, here's an interview we did with ^redacted‌ a while back that may be of interest: Top Legal Issues Searchers Face: https://www.searchfunder.com/article/viewarticle/1041. ~ Karen

Hi Anne, I didn't go the traditional Search Fund route, but definitely had some bad experiences with counter party attorneys on two of my deals. One was a VERY experienced and prominent construction litigation attorney that the seller had a relationship with from past experience - had no clue how to do a transaction. In another case, my seller tried to represent herself and increased my legal costs significantly because her edits were non-sensical. So, it's not exactly the question you asked, but as much as possible it's important that your sellers have a lawyer who understands transactions - otherwise, plan for higher legal costs for yourself as a result.
