Keen to hear from people who have sought external specialist valuation support (be that in support of a deal or for e.g. the valuation of share incentives) - what has worked / not worked for you, and what has driven the decision to seek such support (or not)?

On the buy or sell side? IMHO on the buy side, as a standalone acquisition my valuation is based on the seller's next-best alternative, and that doesn't just include financial criteria. This can only be determined through me talking directly with them. If you're talking about owners rolling equity, or incentivising hired-in management, you can think about your most likely exit scenario and work back from there to a % today. For an EMI ESOP you will need HMRC approval and in the past I have had experienced local accountants prepare supporting information and a letter to justify a particular valuation (which you want to be low).
