Turns Out, I'm Not Just Looking for a Business to Buy
Almost exactly a year ago, I started searching for a business to buy. My thesis was basically ETA canon: Find a good, cash-flowing business. Buy it at a reasonable multiple. Operate it well. Hold it for a long time. A year and a lot of deals later, I’ve realized something: I don’t think I want to buy a great business and hold it forever. I want to transform one. I’m drawn to situations where there can be a clear before-and-after, and I want to own the journey to get there. That might be: - A turnaround situation - Good revenue, but bad operations - A strategy change that requires the company to adapt - A recent ownership change or preparing the business for a sale I want the mandate to get it from here to there. Set the destination. Give me ownership of the outcome. Let me build the systems, team, operating model and accountability needed to actually get there. And that’s changed how I think about my search. I’m still looking for the right self-funded or investor-backed acquisition. But I’ve also come to realize I don’t have to be the one who finds and buys the company. If someone already owns the right business and needs an operator to lead the transformation, I’m very open to that too. I’m flexible on structure, but I’m looking for real ownership of the outcome, participation in the value created, and ideally a 2–3 year horizon to do the work. My background is primarily CPG, manufacturing and ecommerce, with deep experience across supply chain, finance, strategic planning and analytics. So, this is my bat signal. If you own a business like this, have one in your portfolio, or know someone staring at a transformation they need help pulling off, please introduce me. Thanks!
