Tonight I get five minutes at Massachusetts Institute of Technology to tell the story of how a freight guy ended up owning a 45-year-old drainage company. I've got three slides. Here's what's on them: In 2015 I left a $450K-a-year job at C.H. Robinson, because I could see freight getting digitized, automated and offshored. Then I built a hazardous chemical trucking company to $40M in cumulative revenue and got out in 2023. After 17 years in freight, I had one rule: I never wanted to compete in a commodity industry EVER again. I searched for about a year and found Tommy Pollina on BizBuySell. It was the opposite of a commodity. We do drainage, grading, hardscape and landscape. When water is running toward your foundation, you have to fix it or your house may possibly get destroyed, and guess what: AI, Automation and offshoring can't fix it water when its coming into your house. Joe Pollina has been doing this around Chicago since 1982, and he went back to the same yards for years to see what held up. Nobody can repeat 45 years of that. So we downloaded Joe's brain. His 45 years are now written down as our methods, so someone new can learn them. Then I added what 17 years in the ultra competitive, ultra commoditized freight and logistics industry taught me about running an operation that had to be extremely lean, highly tech enabled , and automated. From that foundation we built our four machines: lead flow, automation, offshore operations, and subcontracting model that we started on day I bought the business. A franchisee gets both from day one. That's what I'm talking about tonight. The other four presenters sell chicken sandwiches, senior care, accounting and pre-school. We fix flooded backyards. If you're in Boston, come and say hi. It's free, at 32 Vassar St, Cambridge, and doors open at 5:45 PM. If you had five minutes to tell people how you got where you are, what would make the cut?
