Okay, yeah rollups are cool. What about those interesting theses that may not require multiple targets? I mean who here is the next Elon buying Tesla with a plan to make it something wholly new and paradigm shifting? Any books, frameworks, tips on how to develop a novel thesis relevant to M&A?

I doubt anyone would frame Elon Musk as a 'Searcher'. Musk has a technology and innovation thesis which he has brought to life via his acquisitions. A searcher thesis is unique and focused on improvements to an existing business. This is intentional to give inexperienced managers an opportunity to develop skills and not break the business while they transition in.
