I meet individually with about 500 searchers, investors, lenders, and service providers each year within and adjacent to the search fund community. Over the past 9 years, I've accumulated a deep reservoir of knowledge through those meetings and extensive reading. A common question I encounter from aspiring searchers is how to approach investors to help fund their search and/or acquisition.
Drawing on everything I've learned, I offer three steps toward crafting a vivid portrait for your entrepreneurial journey. I believe this is the best guiding principle to effectively approaching investors.
I am always leery of folks who try to distill everything down to 3, 5, or whatever number of steps. So, I know there is much layered detail to be considered. My work in developing the EtA Launch Hub, a pre-accelerator for prospective business buyers, led me to write a comprehensive 200-page guidebook and launch VAULT, a mini-TV channel, both dedicated to helping searchers define that vision and successfully execute on it. Yet, new searchers are often not ready for that detail and are seeking the 3 steps to get started. That's why I wrote this piece.
A clear and well-crafted vision aligns your aspirations with your current position, helping you attract the right resources and avoid missteps.
