I recently acquired a business and I've been looking for a veteran CEO to run it - I thought I'd contribute to those in a similar position here.

Hiring the right CEO for your business is one of the most important decisions you can make. Knowing what to look for in a leader and how to hire them will help ensure that your company thrives. The traits you need are:

  1. Communication skills- Effective communication with all members of the team is crucial. A good communicator should be able to understand where others are coming from, speak their language, and get messages across effectively without offending anyone.

  2. Strong Work Ethic- You want someone who has an ambitious work ethic that they believe in, not just somebody who wants a paycheck or promotion at any cost. They should have integrity and be willing to go above expectations when necessary which shows loyalty.

  3. Passion- Finally, your CEO should have a genuine passion for their work. They should be excited about the company’s mission. If at any point this is lost, it can be difficult to recover.

Ability to delegate. Too many CEOs are just operators. They feel the need to control the tasks to the point where they just do them themselves. A good CEO is one that understands what needs to be done, who the best resource is to get it done and then follows up to ensure that it was done.
