Tax and Accounting?

I've been looking into and got quite close on a deal in the tax and accounting space. Although this specific opportunity at least temporarily didn't work out, I'm looking at taking a slightly more patient approach to it by pursuing an Enrolled Agent license and potentially even working for a tax season doing tax prep (I already have significant accounting experience though I'm not a CPA, but I'm currently missing tax expertise). Before I commit too far though, I want to make sure this is the direction I want to take. Does anyone have any good resources to recommend on this industry? Or even better, have experience with it and would be willing to jump on a call to chat? Secondarily, any thoughts on getting tax experience as I outlined above vs. just acquiring without such experience? My goal is to acquire large enough (i.e. ~$1 mil EBITDA) that I'm not having to always be in the trenches doing the actual tax and accounting work, but even without licensing requirements in most states, I'm hesitant to acquire something where I don't at least have a baseline amount of knowledge. Thanks!

Hi Allan, that's exciting you're looking at acquiring an accounting firm. I think your intuition to to find a balance between getting enough tax knowledge while setting yourself up to not be in service delivery mode is right. I recently became an accounting firm owner and am also a '22 SOM alum - happy to talk more about my experience and help any way I can
