success/failures converting other roles into sales people?

Has anyone ever had success converting someone who was a buyer for your service/product in their previous role into a sales person? 

Ex. Your company sells SaaS to marketers and you convert someone who previously was a head of marketing into a sales rep to sell to other marketers

I understand this doesn't scale across all industries so looking for wins or horror stories!
