Does anyone have examples of successful searches that were constrained by both industry and geo? Everything I hear is you should either do (1) nationwide, but a specific industry or (2) geographically constrained, but any industry.

Most of my business-buying clients who are first-time owners (who may or may not consider themselves "Searchers" per se) limited in their search to the Twin Cities metro, because that's where they live, and that's where they wanted to stay (our winters here are hard to replicate). Some of them were also very industry-specific. Now, many of these businesses may not have been $1m+ in EBITDA (or what HBR refers to as "enduringly profitable"), but they are good businesses that got the Buyer off the sidelines and into the great game of business. There are a LOT of businesses out there. If you limit your industry or your geography you may not have as many options, and you may have to lower your standards, but you will still have options. Good luck!
