Shared services acquisition

A friend of mine owns a residential/commercial solar installer business. He's interested in acquiring an electrical company to fuel growth and help meet current staffing needs. Does anyone know of any groups who have done this?
I'm sure part of his idea is due to frustrations with staffing and contractors, but i'm curious if this kind of integration makes sense.
