First time poster here relatively new to the space. I’m a self funded searcher looking to acquire and operate a small manufacturing business (few geographic constraints), while at the same time juggling a demanding W2 job and mastering my diaper changing skills. Time management is critical to me. I’m early in my search and am finding that casting a wide net with brokered deals is a significant time investment, despite often not seeing the types of companies I’m most interested in. Because of this, I’d really value this community’s input as I start with a proprietary search. I’m specifically looking for small B2B manufacturers with a real competitive moat - not just customer relationships, but a distinct capability, process, material expertise or IP that would be difficult to replicate. My interests center on industrial products/equipment aligned with ongoing trends in industrial modernization, automation and electrification. Some illustrative areas I’ve explored (examples, not requirements): - Specialized materials, equipment or capabilities that support automation or precision production - Products/equipment used in electricity generation, storage or electrical grid modernization - Hardware/equipment supporting (i) advanced manufacturing (including robotics or industrial sensors) and (ii) maintenance/repair Ideal business characteristics: - B2B manufacturer with an EV and margins that would support an SBA 7a loan - Differentiated process, material or product offering - Diverse customer base, ideally with international exposure - Relatively resilient to inflation and trade disruptions My goal is to grow the business organically and potentially expand into export markets over time. My question to those in the community here: Have you encountered any niche industrial manufacturing subsectors or “hidden corners” of industrial supply chains that fit this profile and that you would suggest I explore? Any ideas, even if you encountered them only briefly during your own search, would be super appreciated. Feel free to respond here or DM. I’m ready to focus on attending industry conferences and joining a couple industry associations for some meaningful networking, so I'm hoping for some direction from someone further along this path. Big thanks in advance.

@redacted‌ My partner Ben has gone down this rabbit hole before and found a lot of opportunity in CNC machining. As for running search while working full time we cover the gambit in our free webinar at the end of month. Look forward to see you there and can answer a little more in Q&A. https://www.joinleland.com/event/how-to-run-an-efficient-small-business-search

Thanks for the suggestion and the link - definitely useful in my case! Regarding CNC machining: were you thinking more about OEM manufacturers producing components/sub-assemblies to CNC machines, or traditional machine shops offering CNC machining services?
