Searchers who broker deals they don't want to buy — smart move or conflict of interest?
Curious where the Searchfunder community lands on this. I've been seeing a growing number of searchers who are also operating as business brokers — representing sellers on deals that fall outside their buy box rather than just walking away from them. The case for it is pretty compelling: you're already doing the hardest part of brokerage. You know how to find businesses, talk to owners, and evaluate deals. If a company doesn't fit your criteria but it's a solid business, why not list it, run a process, and earn a commission instead of leaving empty-handed? The pushback I hear most often: the moment you shift from "potential buyer" to "broker representing the seller," does the owner feel misled? Is there a trust issue in that transition? My instinct is that transparency handles most of it — if you're upfront with the owner about what changed and why, most of them don't care. They just want the business sold. What's your experience? Have any of you made this work, or does it create more friction than it's worth?
