I have to post anon due to my W2, but looking for any feedback of things to look out for or ask about when looking at a school bus transport company. Will happily take any guidance as this would be a huge transition for me and I am new to the industry. Thanks so much in advance.

Would recommend working on obtaining answers to questions that get at contract durability, fleet replacement risk, safety/compliance history, labor stability, and hidden costs. These five areas could make or break the business post-acquisition. Example places to start: 1. Contracts & Revenue Stability • Length, renewal terms, and cancellation clauses of school district contracts. • Concentration risk: is revenue tied to just one or two districts? • Payment terms — how fast do they actually get paid? 2. Fleet Condition & Liabilities • Average age, mileage, and condition of buses. • Upcoming capital expenditures (replacements, upgrades). • Any liens/loans tied to the fleet. 3. Compliance & Safety • DOT, state, and federal compliance records. • Accident history and insurance claims. • Inspection and maintenance logs — any gaps or “catch-up” risk? 4. Labor & Operations • Driver availability and turnover — is there a driver shortage? • Union presence or labor agreements. • Overtime costs, absenteeism, and reliance on substitutes. 5. Cost Structure • Fuel arrangements — contracted or spot pricing? • Maintenance costs (in-house vs. outsourced). • Insurance premiums — and any recent spikes. 6. Reputation & Relationships • Feedback from districts, parents, and community. • Recent complaints or service disruptions. • Local competitor landscape — who else is bidding for routes? 7. Transition & Risk Factors • Pending RFPs that could change contract scope. • Key managers or dispatch staff likely to stay or leave. • Environmental considerations (mandated clean-fuel transitions, e.g., EV adoption).
