Sales tax exemptions for fitness studios (think yoga)?

Has anyone sellers which did not pay state sales taxes (for years) and are claiming exempt status? The broker is asserting that this is common for fitness studios but I'm concerned about audit + back taxes.

This is in Tennessee? Not sure of any state specific differences as I'm based in Canada, but this sounds fishy and there should definitely be audit concern here
