I am in the evaluation process to decided to move full time into a self-funded search. One of the risk factors is the break in my resume if I do not successfully close a deal. How would you express what you did during that time if back applying for a corporate job? Seems like the searching and evaluation / diligence skills would be mostly applicable for corporate M&A positions.

Is a full time search necessary, or could you manage this while you work? Even if not your current job, perhaps another, more flexible one? The resume part would be easy to wordsmith. You're managing a search fund. It might be small, it may even be unsuccessful, but that doesn't make it a "gap" in work history. It is work history.

I also like the answer to burn the boats, but it's hard to say that without more details. In general, I always fall off the tightrope when my eyes are focused on the safety net.

What's your runway? At what point have you "failed" the search and need to return to corporate life? Feel free to message me if if you want to chat!

I hire a lot of people and I’m probably more focused on employment gaps than the average bear. I think just putting the name of your firm + an explanation of the experience it provided would be more than sufficient for me. I’d jump at the chance to hire a searcher because it says a lot about their drive and problem solving abilities. I wouldn’t use the title ‘CEO’ though, because that will act as a negative filter in a lot of cases. I’d probably go with ‘Sole Member’ or ‘Managing Member’.
