are there any reports that cover the state of SMEs in UK as a whole, with info on how many may be up for sale, sectors etc

Hi Tim, I don't know of any specific reports with all the information you are after. But you can draw some conclusions from ONS publicly available data (e.g., this on SME count by industry redacted). Hope this helps!
