Aside from books (eg HBR guide to buying small businesses), networking, and this awesome community, are there other pieces of content (blogs, podcasts, thought leaders) that you recommend for initiating your first search?

Definitely start with the search fund specific stuff recommended above. But I found that, since search funds are such a small niche, it's easy to get through just about all the search fund specific material.

If you're looking for further reading, I'd definitely recommend Warren Buffett's annual letters and anything on value investing since the principals for buying stocks (a small piece of a business) are the same as the principals for buying a business outright. Buffett's letters are particularly relevant because he talks at length about his control acquisitions. You can learn the reasons for the success of See's Candies (could raise prices with no drop-off in demand) or Nebraska Furniture Mart and Borsheim's (low OPEX --> lower prices --> higher volume --> huge selection) or insurance (even with a sub-100 combined ratio, a low-cost source of funds). Although Buffett doesn't provide management like a searcher would, his letters are still useful for operational wisdom since he explains what he looks for in great management.
