Job Title: PR & Media Outreach Intern — Harriet Ventures Portfolio Companies
Employment Type: Unpaid Internship (Part-time, flexible hours — ideal for academic credit or portfolio building)
Potential to earn a bonus compensation at the end of internship if project is successful in securing press.
About Us
Harriet Ventures acquires and builds exceptional businesses, responsibly shepherding legacy companies into their next era of growth. We're a small, hands-on firm where there's no layer of middle management between you and the top. Our interns work directly with the CEOs of our portfolio companies — not a PR coordinator, not an assistant, the CEO.
The Role
We're looking for a motivated college student to own a PR campaign for our portfolio companies from the ground up. You'll build a targeted list of journalists and publications aligned with each company's brand and industry, conduct cold email outreach to key press contacts, and work to land media coverage. This is real, high-impact work — every email you send is an actual pitch to an actual journalist, and every placement you secure is real press for a real business.
You'll have direct input on strategy and messaging, work closely with the CEO on what stories to pitch and why, and own the entire outreach process. You'll walk away with a portfolio of press placements, direct mentorship from an executive, and hard proof that you can drive media relations for a business.
What You'll Do
- Research and build a targeted list of journalists, editors, and publications aligned with each portfolio company's brand, industry, and target audience
- Analyze journalist beats, recent coverage, and publication focus to identify the best fit for our stories
- Write and send personalized cold email pitches to journalists on behalf of the CEO
- Track outreach efforts — who you've contacted, response rates, and follow-ups
- Manage the PR timeline and coordinate with the CEO on story angles, key messages, and press releases
- Follow up with journalists who show interest and nurture those relationships
- Document and celebrate wins — track which placements land and analyze what worked
- Bring ideas to the table on which stories to pitch, which outlets to target, and how to position our companies in the press
What You'll Gain
- Direct mentorship and strategy sessions with a CEO on how to think about brand, positioning, and media relations
- Full ownership of a real PR campaign with measurable outcomes
- A portfolio of press placements and media coverage you can point to
- Real-world experience in media research, journalist outreach, and PR strategy
- Understanding of how executives think about narrative and brand positioning
- Hands-on experience with the entire PR cycle — from research to pitch to placement
- A strong reference and letter of recommendation based on performance
Who You Are
A current college student (any major — communications, journalism, marketing, business, and PR backgrounds all welcome) seeking real professional experience
Strong writer with the ability to craft compelling, personalized pitches to journalists
Detail-oriented and organized — you can manage lists, track outreach, and follow up consistently
Naturally curious about the media landscape and comfortable doing research
Self-directed and reliable — you don't need someone checking in daily to stay on track
Comfortable with rejection and persistence — PR outreach requires thick skin and resilience
Excited by the idea of measuring success by real placements and tangible media coverage
