Operating in Washington DC when business is based outside DC?

I have a Virginia based LLC that performs low voltage outdoor lighting design and installations for residential and commercial clients. This work doesn’t require licenses or permits in Virginia and most states. I am considering filing paperwork that would allow me to perform work in DC. Anyone out there with operations experience in DC for a company not based there?
