I'm looking at acquiring a moving company that focuses on long-distance moves. It's a small biz, owner essentially subcontracts the packing, driving, and unloading. I don't have experience in this area and don't know what I don't know. Marketing, Sales, and operations management all sound very easy. I'd love to speak with someone who knows this space that can give me some insights. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't provide the insider knowledge you are looking for, but I have moved multiple times across country. The industry is very fragmented and it is filled with moving brokers that claim to not be brokers to customers looking to actually talk with their movers and tons of sub-contracting from one company to another. From a business stand point, it makes sense since the costs for movements vary quite a bit and these sub-contracting efforts are all about maximizing the space available on trucks and creating the most efficient routes. Brokering the moves also allows the broker to take a cut of the profit from sourcing the move without doing the actual moving, and helps serve the actual movers who need to spend their time working out tons of cost-saving logistics. The negatives to all of this: customers are unable to ensure specific pick up or drop off dates and customers are often lied to about who is actually handling their move. I personally believe that differentiating in this space comes from customer service and transparency, two aspects that all moving firms / brokers I've used all claim to have but certainly varied in reality. I wouldn't recommend for or against this business, just my pov as someone who has moved a bunch. Good luck!
