Most new CEOs signal alignment with a speech. Abel did it with a check.
Greg Abel’s first act as Berkshire CEO was not a bold acquisition or a strategy pivot. He took his entire $15.3M after-tax salary and bought 21 Class A shares at roughly $729K each. Then he restarted buybacks, ending a 21-month freeze, because price finally justified it.
“Absolute alignment with our shareholders, our partners, our owners, is critical,” he told CNBC. That line is cheap. The check is not. And he plans to do it every year he is CEO.
The lesson for every private holdco builder: stewardship is not a philosophy. It is a set of specific, visible, costly actions. Talk is the easiest thing you produce. Founders and backers who actually mean it find something to give up first.
Is your alignment stated or demonstrated?
