I am in the US with an E-2 investor visa and like to understand how the legal setup would look like when I would acquire a firm. Essentially trying to understand how I can marry the E-2 terms with the search fund model. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for your advice.

It can really be any structure. The key is that they are going to invest (or have invested) a "significant" amount of money. The amount is undefined, and you need an active business so a search fund itself wouldn't work, but if they invested when the search fund purchased its business that should work. The details are very important, and you'd want to get an immigration attorney involved for the application process, but from a structuring perspective it's less important.
