After interviewing a very good number of founders, investors, and potential candidates to search with (interviewing not in the classical sense) I have to say that it all hinges on one question: Do you have the right partner in your network? From my perspective it makes little sense to build a relationship if there isnt an established on yet with a new partner - instead I would rather focus on the search. So from my point of view, if its not relatively easy to find a partner (i.e. you have someone in your mind and meet for drinks and dinner with them a couple of times to spark their interest), I would focus on searching alone.

Either way can be successful - I will mention the relatively obvious aspect that supporting two executives takes more money out of the company, so one should plan on purchasing larger companies (or use more equity in the transaction). I can definitely say that I would not have been able to make the progress that I made in the past 3 yrs without a partner. I know others that have gone solo and done very well though. I think it depends on the company and your ambitions for it. Having a partner with complementary functional skills can be a huge asset though, especially if you are trying to grow rapidly.
