When you started out, how were you able to stay sane with the amount of information out there when trying to buy a business?

There is so much information about what is right, what is wrong, what business to buy, what not to buy, whether to get a partner or not.

Unless you have a guide, it's really hard to stay focused.

Starting a new venture can be overwhelming due to the sheer amount of information and decisions involved. Here are some strategies to help you avoid information overload: ### 1. Set Clear Goals - **Define Objectives:** Clearly outline your short-term and long-term goals. Knowing what you want to achieve will help you focus on relevant information. - **Prioritize Tasks:** Identify the most critical tasks that need immediate attention and focus on them first. ### 2. Organize Your Information - **Use Tools and Apps:** Utilize digital tools like Trello, Asana, or Notion to organize tasks and information. These tools can help you manage projects and keep track of what’s important. - **Create a System:** Develop a filing system for storing information, whether digital or physical, to make retrieval easy. ### 3. Focus on Essentials - **Filter Information:** Concentrate on the information that directly impacts your goals and decisions. Ignore the noise and unnecessary details. - **Limit Sources:** Choose a few reliable sources for news and updates in your industry to reduce the volume of incoming information. ### 4. Set Boundaries - **Limit Research Time:** Allocate specific time slots for research and information gathering to prevent it from taking up your entire day. - **Avoid Multitasking:** Focus on one task at a time to ensure you’re not spreading your attention too thin. ### 5. Develop a Routine - **Create a Schedule:** Establish a daily routine that includes dedicated time for planning, working, and reviewing progress. - **Take Breaks:** Regular breaks can help clear your mind and improve concentration. ### 6. Seek Guidance - **Mentorship:** Connect with mentors or industry experts who can provide guidance and help you filter important information. - **Networking:** Join industry groups or forums where you can ask questions and share experiences with peers. ### 7. Use Mindfulness Techniques - **Stay Present:** Practice mindfulness to help you focus on the present moment and reduce stress. - **Reflect Regularly:** Take time to reflect on your progress and adjust your approach as needed. ### 8. Simplify Decisions - **Break Down Tasks:** Divide large projects into smaller, manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. - **Use Decision-Making Frameworks:** Apply frameworks like the Eisenhower Box or Pareto Principle to make informed choices quickly. By implementing these strategies, you can manage information more effectively and reduce the risk of feeling overwhelmed as you start your business journey.

Echoing what ^redacted‌ and ^redacted‌ said with HBR’s Guide to Buying a Small Business, Walker Deibel’s, Buy then Build., if you haven't already ^redacted‌, these two books are a great place to start. They lay the foundation and will give you a lot of tools to define your search. I'm guility of information overload myself, and often think I need to read every searchfunder article, or every book out there on management, but thats all cart-before-the-horse stuff. For me, I'm very much in the search, and trying to find the business that fits my criteria so focusing on ways to create deal flow is my focus. I believe there will be time to work out the nitty gritty if I can find the right business. I'd also recommend listening to the Acquiring Minds podcast by ^redacted‌. This single resource has taught me there are soooo many tools in the tool belt that I didn't even knew existed. Seriously one of the best resources out there for searchers. I've been able to reach out to memebers of the podcast and connect with them directly which has been a really informative experience.

Networking is also your greatest resource. Find a local ETA meetup and get connected with others on this journey!
