Independent Sponsor : Creating a platform

As an Independent Sponsor, I have seen a few people do all their equity deals in 500K-1 M businesses to reach the traditional 2-3M Platform level. Is this individual wealth, family and friends money? The conventional PE firms that you meet as an Independent Sponsor won't deploy capital unless the check size is a min of 5 - 10M

Leigh, we have done this in the deathcare space. We started with a CEO and nothing under LOI and spent ~$5M before raising outside capital. If you can show inertia, folks will invest in a strong buy and build strategy with a path to deploy $10M+, but it requires some upfront personal wealth.

Thanks. That's helpful. How many partners did you have? How much did CEO kick in? 5M out of my pocket doesn't leave a hell of a lot else. What were your economics? You can take this off line if you prefer not to answer here
