Day 0 - where would you start? How would a new searcher get started in this field?

You're starting in a good place. I suggest the Stanford Search Primer as a Stage 1. Second, I'd reach out to your alma mater. They likely have access to or know European style firms that focus in that area. Finally, you'll need to determine if you want to follow the search fund style method or branch out and do something bolder.
