How to uncover unique acquisition opportunities?

I listen to a lot of these amazing SMB podcast where they interview searchers that were able to uncover these unique, niche businesses. I'm curious besides broker outreach, listing sites, possibly using lead list to uncover pre-market deals. Question for this community. How were you or someone you know able to find these unique opportunities? Is it just time, effort energy?

You need a strategy which should be generated out of intensive research on areas or industries that have experienced good levels of acquisition, this helps narrow your search down greatly.
