Depends upon how much quality time/money you invested to learn best practices - before searching. (It's not a good idea to taint your target population with amateur approaches or interactions.)

That timeframe makes me feel a lot better. I'm 6 months into my search; I've reviewed about 100 companies and have had two fall apart under LOI. I think there are a lot of factors that can increase the length of your search, like geographic restrictions, industry preferences, personal balance sheet, etc. However, the largest struggle is finding a good company that the bank is willing to finance.
