Help understanding the searchfund model

I'm new to this and still trying to wrap my arms around the model and how it works. Me and my team have built a few dental service organizations and would like to do it again. We have some pipeline deals, but are looking for a long-term investor 7-10yrs. and with better PE terms than if I were brought into a deal as CEO of a PE backed company, and only getting upside equity. Can someone help explain how I can leverage the searchfund model. (I'm still trying to figure out what it means)

+1 on Ali Aydar's book recommendation - am going through the process now and that HBR guide has been like my bible. Definitely get a pdf copy and an ebook copy so you can bring it anywhere you go
