I have seen lots of posts that suggest Hubspot to track deals and possibly for fundraising as well. But also understand that Hubspot needs to be customized to work well. Any suggestions or guides?

Hubspot, similar to many other CRM tools, is very powerful and can be configured to suit many situations. The core questions to consider is how do you plan to use plan to use Hubspot as an ongoing concern? Do you plan to use it only during your search phase or beyond? Do you have multiple searches? How have you executed searches up to this point? Why do you think you need something like Hubspot? I've seen people spend endless hours "configuring" their CRM system when they would have been better off with a stack of 3x5 notecards and a good system for contacting people in their target market.

I don't think it takes much customization. I create unique fields for the different types of relationships (brokers, IBs, lenders, advisors, targets etc.) and then make sure your outlook is connected so you can track all emails. Create a "deal" whenever you get a new opportunity in the door and manage it with custom fields (intro call, CIM received, IOI submitted etc.). I've found the tasks can get unwieldy. I'll still create them but it's difficult to manage and stay on top of.

The most important thing is to make sure everything that happens gets tracked.
