I used Minimal Viable Expansion approach - insight for those considering contracting/construction acquisitions.
The contracting business was receiving calls for jobs across the country. Sometimes they sent crews, sometimes they didn't. But with a structured approach to expansion, they could systematically capture these opportunities.

Many successful businesses are leaving growth opportunities on the table by turning down work outside their immediate area. Expanding isn't always a good solution. However, expanding doesn't have to require a massive investment or complex logistics.
We came up with minimal viable expansion strategy:

- A small crew (less than 5 people)

- One local estimator

That's it. With just these resources, this contracting business can test new markets and lay the groundwork for significant growth.

Why it works:

- Low initial cost

- Leverages existing reputation

- Allows for organic growth

- Tests the market with minimal risk

The best part? Most established contracting businesses already have the operational playbook in place. It's just a matter of replicating it in a new location.

For searchers, this presents an interesting angle when evaluating potential acquisitions. A contracting business that's geographically limited but has a strong reputation and solid operations could be a goldmine.

Has anyone here acquired a contracting business and attempted geographical expansion? What was your experience?

I'm curious to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Yeah, I used to send our commercial flooring crews all over the country. These crews have experience with long-distance travel and logistics.
