My $.02, searching is mostly a test of your persistence and your ability to be realistic and willing to work. Operating a business is a series of gut punches that you just have to take and keep moving forward. Again, it's about grit and determination. If your consulting experience was like that (it often is) then it's great preparation. If you were doing high level strategy or technical work, it's not directly useful. Consultants can absolutely succeed in search, but it's not a guarantee. There is no perfect background though, you will always have skills gaps that you have to work through with other people.
