Looking to learn more about this space. What are the pros and cons? How to compete against the giants like Aramark, Sodexo, etc. Thank you!

Hi Conrad - I have a bit of experience in this space, going up against those very companies. To put it simply, it will all come down to your USP. You can differentiate yourself on any number of characteristics (size, product, demographic geography, etc). One specific advantage that comes to mind is the M/WBE procurment requirements that many cities have in place. One clarification - facilities management became a natural extension of both Aramark's and Sodexo's business, their primary area being foodservice contracting. Were you looking at facility management only, or foodservice as well?

I have some experience here, particularly in manufacturing facilties or data centers. One fragmented portion is for maintenance services for various mechanical systems, this requires local labor and are often highly technical. Hard to go with big firms since they are several layers of contracts separated from the local teams but facility managers aren't resourced to identify local partners easily. Someone who can thread that needle could do well. And second on the MBE, thats an advantage too.
